After a major storm a decade+ back, David gathered various sticks to create a series of 3-D beach structures, informed by the numerous abstracted toothpick sculptures he built as a kid growing up in Iowa. He then covered them with papier-mâché, referencing another childhood memory of his art-making.

Continuing the process today, he now also creates structures scaled down in size that hang on a wall, so not quite 2-dimensional. He refers to them as 2½-dimensional work. Along with the sourced beach sticks, he also makes use of bamboo that grows alongside his house.

When laying the strips out to dry he often likes the composition of these configurations, realizing they work just as they are. Thus, some of the end results are these 2-dimensional paper strip pieces that he is exhibiting here.

David creates artifacts marked by the passage of time, transforming them into contemporary statements. Working within a specific environment at a given time, he creates structures, prints, other works on paper, altered photographs, and site-specific installations. Living in Seattle near Puget Sound, he sources a nearby beach for much of his material, often, found sticks or other forms of wood – natural or man-altered.
